2016 Digital, TV Opps: State Farm considering brand repositioning

Opportunity: Has reportedly asked agencies for brand repositioing ideas. It is typical for State Farm to ask the agencies on its roster for fresh creative ideas each spring, but now the company is potentially looking to get rid of its “Get to a Better State” campaign. A spokeswoman for State Farm told AdAge: “We consistently work with multiple agencies to maintain a relevant brand in the marketplace.” State Farm’s current agency roster includes: FCB Chicago (below-the-line marketing). Note that “Get to a Better State” was created by DDB not long after it won the creative account back from FCB in 2011. State Farm has increased its TV and digital spend in 2015, so sellers should go ahead and reach out to get ahead of 2016 dollars (more detail below).

New CEO Appointment: Michael Tipsford took over as CEO of State Farm in September. He replaced Edward Rust, who held the position for nearly 30 years. 

Competitors: Companies like Geico, Progressive, Allstate and others that offer fast, online purchasing options (as well as memorable marketing).

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, State Farm spent $592.2 million on measured media in 2014 – down 5.4% from 2013. While most of this – 66.3% – was allocated to broadcast ads (mostly cable and network TV), the bulk of the remainder went to digital (12.3%) and Hispanic media (14..3%).

Per iSpot, State Farm has spent $280.2 million on national TV ads in 2015 – up from $252.9 million in 2014. See charts for 2015 channel/show targeting.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that State Farm has run 2,196 display ads on over 10,800 publishers so far this year (13% mobile). Top ad destinations include: cars.com, live.com, weather.com, lamusica.com and adultswim.com. The company has also run 2,131 high impact ads and 105 video ads in 2015. N9ote that 66% of State Farm’s ads this year have been placed site direct. State Farm’s 2015 display SOV is 41.1% (No. 1 over Progresssive, Allstate and Geico). News and automotive sites receive the highest spend. 

For the same period 2014, State Farm ran 1.471 creatives on 6,820 publishers (only 42% placed site direct). The company also ran 1,864 high impact ads last year (no video ads).
