Toro Company buys turf maintenance assets from TYCROP

The Story
Turf and landscape equipment provider The Toro Company announced it has acquired certain assets from TYCROP Manufacturing Ltd., a leading manufacturer of topdressing and material handling equipment for golf course and sports field applications, according to the company.
Bloomington, Minn.-based Toro has acquired several models of TYCROP’s equipment in an effort to enhance the company’s position in the turf maintenance industry.
TYCROP products will be marketed under the Toro brand and sold through Toro’s distribution channel in the United States and international markets.
“Golf courses and sports fields rely on these machines to achieve improved agronomic conditions and to create healthy, consistent playing surfaces. TYCROP’s solid reputation in this important category complements our existing line of application and cultivation equipment,” Toro’s Vice President of Commercial Business Michael Happe said in a statement.
The Toro Company is a leading worldwide provider of turf and landscape maintenance equipment and precision irrigation systems. The company has built a number of strong brands to help customers care for golf courses, sports fields, public green spaces, commercial and residential properties and agricultural fields.
The Research
Public Relations Manager Branden Happel told DailyVista that TYCROP is part of that effort.
“TYCROP holds a solid reputation in the industry and its product line helps extend our presence in this important category here in the U.S. and around the world,” he said. “There exists incremental revenue opportunities as international customers further adopt the practice of topdressing on greens, fairways and sports fields.”
Through the acquisition, Toro is purchasing TYCROP’s turf maintenance business, which more specifically includes the ProPass 200, MH-400 and Dirt Cub products.
Toro Company will take on the responsibility for marketing these products, since they will eventually be branded Toro and will be manufactured at the company’s Tomah, Wis.-based facility, Happel said.
“We expect these products to be ready for market by early 2010,” he added. “I can’t speak to (near- and long-term goals) beyond what I have shared.”
According to Happel, TYCROP’s line of topdressers and material handlers helps Toro Company broaden its offering to professional customers worldwide.
“This acquisition complements our channel to market, and reinforces our commitment to growing our business and the value we provide customers,” he said. “It’s important to note that these products are used by professional customers and much of this business is based on relationships.”
Toro Company primarily utilizes television advertising to target its core consumers. Our source said that the company currently works with a slew of agencies for its marketing and branding efforts.
The Direction
Happel told DV that at this time, Toro Company is not actively seeking out new partnerships, but this could change once TYCROP’s assets are rolled into its portfolio and the company begins marketing these items as their own. Keep the company on a long-term prospect list, giving enough time for the deal to close and for the maintenance products to become branded with Toro’s name.
