Score 72 – Account in Jeopardy: Evine Live names first CMO to aid brand growth

Subject: digital, TV, social media, online, mobile

Company: Winmo), formerly ValueVision Media, is a digital commerce company that operates as ShopHQ. ShopHQ is a 24/7 interactive digital shopping and entertainment experience known for its TV home shopping and online retail platforms. EVINE Live is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal.

Opportunity: Recently named Nicole Stroya as CMO and head of broadcasting. In this role, Stroya will oversee the development and implementation of strategies to drive customer and brand growth. She will be in charged of the company’s broadcasting, marketing functions and e-commerce – a position the company has not really ever had.

Interim CEO Bob Rosenblatt said the company was looking to make “the right investments” in marketing and customer acquisition.  He also said the company is aware of the importance of utilizing marketing as an important component in strategy and, as such, is an area of focus for 2016. EVINE Live will also become “more aggressive” with CRM and develop enterprising customer acquisition marketing strategies and campaigns to maximize retention. All of efforts will be part of an expanded overall brand awareness campaign.

Additional Information

Experience: Stroya has launched beauty brands such as New Black and Kissing Elixir and has also served as director of business development for LBMH. She joins EVINE Live just a year after Penny Burnett joined as chief merchandising officer (more here), the strategy for which the company is also reassessing.

Interim CEO Appointment: Bob Rosenblatt, board chairman, was named interim CEO effective Feb. 8. He will remain in this role until a permanent replacement for Mark Bozek is found. Rosenblatt mentioned in the Q4 earnings call that the search was still ongoing and is being conducted with the help of Korn Ferry.

Russell Nuce, who was promoted to chief strategy officer last year, also left the company in February.

New Product Launch: The company recently signed a deal with Vanessa Williams to produce a new fashion collection. V. by Vanessa Williams was made available last weekend. Other recent celebrity collaborations include Nancy O’Dell and Karen Fairchild.

Rebranding: The rebranding to Evine took place in the first half of 2015. The name change (and rebranding) were all part of a long-term goal to become a true digital commerce company. Continuing into 2016, Evine will focus on all things digital and will tout the “ease, exclusivity and energy of this new entertaining consumer experience.”

Another reason to change the name is to end the shopping network's brand confusion. “We believe that fully embracing this new transformation will enable Evine Live to forge new paths and new relationships that allow us to be far more competitive, far more creative, and far more disruptive on all our platforms,” former CEO Mark Bozek said in a prepared statement.  In the Q3 earnings report, he referred to the rebranding as “not just changing the cover on the book,” but as an entirely new chapter for the now digital-focused company.
