Score 78: Account in Jeopardy – American Eagle names CMO ahead of fall campaign launch

Subject: TV, digital, online, video, social media, magazine, adtech, martech

Company: Aerie lingerie sub-brand

Opportunity: Named Kyle Andrew as its new CMO, effective June 6. Andrew replaces Michael Leedy, who left the retailer in Aug 2015 (more here). In her new role, Andrew will lead AEO’s brand and marketing efforts and will report to CEO Jay Schottenstein. Andrew has quite a bit of fashion brand marketing experience, so look for him to hit the ground running when she joins in early June.

Sellers, keep in mind that we have told you of AEO’s plans to increase digital marketing in 2016 (

Agency readers, new CMOs are the surest signal that agency roster shifts will occur. Therefore, reach out to marketing lieutenants and Andrews himself to begin a dialog to secure potential new business. Creative just moved to Interpublic's summer 2014, but a new CMO will certainly examine that relationship, despite AEO's recent success.

Additional Information

Experience: Andrew most recently served as head of global brand marketing for Kate Spade. Prior to that, she was SVP of marketing for Kenneth Cole Productions and has also served as VP of marketing for Gap.

Media Spend: According to Kanatr Media, AEO spent $14.9 million on measured media in 2015 – up from $10.3 million in 2014. Most of this spend was allocated to print ads ($10.1 million) and OOH ($2.6 million). The remainder went to mostly to digital search ads ($1.5 million).

National TV Spend: According to iSpot, AEO has run only two national TV spots since June 2013 (when iSpot began tracking). The last spot was run from Aug. 7 to Sept 1, 2014. While AEO has not explicitly stated that it will re-enter TV, the brand has been enjoying some success in the last few quarters and may decide to launch new TV ads. Having said that, keep in mind that AEO’s target audience tends to skew to younger Millennials who are unteathered from cable and tend to consume media (TV, news, etc.) online. Therefore, it is more likely that online video could play a large part in upcoming strategy.

Digital Breakdown: So far this year, AEO has run 24 display ads on 56 publishers (4% mobile). Top ad destinations inlcude: edmunds.com, secretchina.com, khon2.com and slideshare.net (1% placed site direct versus 99% placed programmatically). AEO has also run one standard ad on Yahoo! Homepage and two video ads on refinery29.com, miamiherald.com, chicagotribune.com and lifestylz.tv. Sellers should note that for the same period 2015, no display, high impact or video ads were run.

AEO’s Aerie brand has run 10 display, 10 high impact and four video ads on 39 publishers this year, per Moat (10% mobile). Top ad destinations include: self.com, iconosquare.com, whowhatwear.com and yahoo.com (51% placed site direct).
