Online jewelry retailer Blue Nile hires Coinstar's former Marketing Head as CMO

Blue Nile. an online retailer of diamonds and fine jewelry, has 20-year marketing veteran Engle Saez as chief marketing officer.

Most recently, he served as head of product and marketing at Coinstar, where he was instrumental in the repositioning and growth of the COIN line of business. He left that position in March, according to
.

“Engle is a proven brand builder and marketing strategist with an impressive record of building enduring brands in the multi-channel, direct-to-consumer space,” President and Chief Executive Officer Harvey Kanter, who
the retailer in March, stated in a release. “His experience and skill will be key in helping Blue Nile continue to evolve and grow. I expect him to have a meaningful impact on how consumers engage with Blue Nile, and I look forward to experiencing those changes first hand.”

Previously, Saez  provided branding, marketing, and product leadership to some of the world's leading retail and consumer brands, including Esprit de Corp, Eddie Bauer, Timberland, Sperry Top-Sider, and Starbucks.

Before Blue Nile, Kanter, a 25-year merchandising and retail veteran, served as president and CEO of Moosejaw Mountaineering and Backcountry Travel Inc., a leading multichannel retailer of premium outdoor apparel and gear. He also was executive vice president and managing director of Michaels Stores, the largest craft store chain in the United States and Canada.

DailyVista contacted Josh Holland, senior manager of corporate communications, to learn more about the company’s growth and marketing direction, but we haven’t received an immediate response.

Earlier this week, the retailer
first quarter 2012 net sales of $83.1 million, up 3.6 percent from the same period last year.

Based in Seattle, Blue Nile offers in-depth educational materials and unique online tools that place consumers in control of the jewelry shopping process. The company aims to deliver the ultimate customer experience, providing customers with a superior way to buy engagement rings, wedding rings and fine jewelry.

The List reports that Blue Nile handles its marketing and advertising internally.

According to Kantar Media, Blue Nile spent $8 million on measured media in 2011, up from $6.8 million in 2010. Display ad spending increased from $800,000 in 2010 to almost $2 million last year.
