In Review: Apple looking to pick retail marketing shop for new, existing initiatives

Opportunity: According to a request for information sent to several shops, Apple’s retail team is reportedly looking for an agency to support new and existing initiatives. The RFI states that the team is seeking support in “strategy and insights, experience design, creative ideation and seamless production,” across global, creative retail and digital. Apple retail marketing team is responsible for “ensuring that every interaction with Apple Retail increases engagement and affinity with out people, products, values and passions,” according to the RFI. A decision is expected by the end of August, so we’ll let you know when we hear something.

According to The List, Omnicom’s OMD West handles traditional and digital media buying and planning for Apple and should not be affected by this RFI.

Additional Insight

Scope of Work: Work could also include retail creative support, editorial programming at retail, events production, B2B communications, internal communications and digital. The RFI also asks if shops have worked with certain competitors, such as Samsung, Sony, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Huawai, Bose, HP, Bowers & Wilkins, Harman and Dell.

Incumbent: According to The List, Apple’s agency roster currently includes:  

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Apple spent $491.8 million on measured media in 2014 – down 24.8% from 2013. Apple’s largest spend period is its Q2 ($196.9 million), which runs from Jan. to March. While Q2/Q3 spend is still high ($235.8 combined), note that spend dropped dramatically in Q4 (July to Sept.) to $59.1 million.  The majority of Apple’s media spend went to broadcast ads – $348.1 million. The next largest spend category was OOH ads, with $60.5 million. The remainder was allocated to: digital ($49.2 million), print ($22.4 million) and Hispanic media ($11.6 million).

National TV Spend: Per iSpot.tv, Apple has spent $117.4 million on national TV ads so far this year. The most money has been spent to air ads on CBS, FOX, ABC, NBC and TBS during shows such as “2015 NCAA Basketball Tournament,” “NFL Football,” “The Voice,” “American Idol” and “The 2015 Oscars.”  Keep in mind that since 2014, most ads air during sports and event programming, like the Grammys and American Idol.

Digital Breakdown: For 2015 so far, Apple has run 90 standard display ads on 804 publishers (4% mobile), according to Moat  Top desktop ad destinations include imgfave.com, go.com, androidpolice.com, tinychat.com and cnet.com. Apple has also run 54 high impact ads and 17 video ads this year.
