Timex Corp. leans on new CMO to refresh strategy


The Research
Ad Age reports that timepiece designer and manufacturer Timex is making big changes to its strategy, led by new executive team members Stephen George, the new senior vice president and chief marketing officer, and Gary Cohen, the new chief executive officer.
 
The two executives plan to guide the iconic brand through its next growth phase, complete with effective strategic partnership opportunities with brands like J. Crew and the New York Giants, which involves naming rights for the football team's practice facility, and sponsorships like for the New York and London marathons.
 
The Middlebury, Conn.-based company is keeping its marketing spend minimal, “surpassing $10 million only once in the past five years,” according to Ad Age.
 
“We are challenging ourselves to think differently about the consumer-purchase journey. And we’re saying it's no longer appropriate for us just to engage with consumers when they're absorbing traditional media, reading a magazine or watching TV,” George said in an interview. “We’re taking a very hard strategic look at how to engage with consumers at each touch point along the way.”

According to The Nielsen Company, Timex spent about $2.5 million on measured media in 2010. About $1.8 million went to national magazine ads, about $230,000 went to television spots and about $160,000 went to Internet ads.
