Bourbon brand Maker’s Mark names VP, Global Marketing

The Story
Leading liquor supplier Fortune Brands has appointed Kelly Doss to the newly-created position of Maker’s Mark’s vice president of global marketing, according to DFNIonline.com.

Doss has worked for Fortune Brands since she joined the Deerfield, Ill.-based company in 2002. During her tenure she has held several brand marketing positions.

Most recently, she served as senior director of U.S. bourbons and whiskeys. Before joining Fortune Brands, she worked with confectionery company Win Wrigley Jr. Co. and beauty suppliers Alberto Culver Corp. and Amway Corp.

Maker’s Mark is a handcrafted, small-batch bourbon whisky. It is aged for about six to seven years before being bottled and sold through distributors.

Fortune Brands is a leading consumer brands company with brands in three different consumer categories: distilled spirits, home and security and golf. 90 percent of the company’s sales come from brands in number one or two market positions.

The Research
Maker’s Mark President Bill Samuels, to whom Doss will report directly, said in a statement that her appointment is coming at a pivotal time in the whisky’s history as the company is looking to expand its U.S. and worldwide presence.

“We like to ‘push the envelope’ at Maker’s Mark, he said in a statement. “With Kelly Doss at the helm of our global marketing initiatives, I’m confident we will continue to deliver to consumers the unexpected and drive innovation in all that we do.

He added that Doss is a proven brand builder and that the company is looking forward to “having her talents and expertise focused on the Maker’s Mark brand throughout the world.”
According to Harper’s Wine and Spirits, Maker’s Mark is already trying to expand its presence in London with an advertising and sampling campaign in London’s trendy Shoreditch district.

The nearby Liverpool Street railway station will feature outdoor ads, which will be supplemented by sampling in local art galleries. Also, discounted Maker’s Mark cocktails are on sale in several of the area’s bars and local artists will display artwork inspired by the Maker’s Mark red wax seal in bars.

The List database was unable to identify which marketing and communications agencies, if any, that Fortune Brands currently works with.

According to the Nielsen Company Fortune Brands spent $97 million on measured media in 2009. About $51.6 million was spent on national magazine ads, about $16.4 million was spent on network television ads and about $15.3 million was spent on cable television ads.
