Q4 Media Opps: No. 490 Target begins cross-channel buying review, will expand programmatic buying

Opportunity: Target has announced that it has begun a review of its programmatic and cross-channel buying. The review is meant to find a shop to assist Target's in-house digital marketing and buying. According to a company spokesperson, Target is “focused on expansion of [its] internal, modern CRM and data-driven marketing capabilities by considering partnerships in the following key areas: platform capability for cross-channel media activation (programmatic, social, video, etc), complementary audience development and measurement and reporting products. Target has its own private exchange marketplace and is now looking for a partner who can help it do more with the data and technology it already has.

Exectuive Appointments: Earlier this year, Target snagged one of MillerCoors top media execs –  Stevie Benjamin joined Target as VP of media strategy (more here). Also, around a year ago, Kristi Argyilan came to Target to support its programmatic push (research here).

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Target spent $727.9 million on measured media. Just over half of this was allocated to broadcast ads, while the remainder was split between print (24.4%), digital (10.1%) and Hispanic (8.6%).

TV Breakdown: reports that Target has spent $130. 7 million on national TV ads since January. The most money has been spent to air ads on ABC, CBS, NBC, TBS and FOX during shows such as “The Big Bang Theory,” “The Voice,” “The 57th Annual Grammy Awards,” “The Bachelor” and “2015 NCAA Basketball Tournament.”
