Campaign Imminent: Famous Footwear hires new creative AOR (Score 61)

Opportunity: The Richards Group as its new AOR (creative, brand strategy, digital and social strategy) after a review. The shop’s first work is slated for back-to-school (BTS), so continue to go after dollars tied to FF’s top advertising period.

As we reported last year (research here), FF shifted has shifted most of its marketing mix to programmatic digital direct response (DR) ads to better reach millennial women, especially moms. This comes as FF continues to battle flat traffic, so look for this more cost effective, higher ROI digital approach to remain for another BTS season.

Agencies – media reviews often follow creative so digital focused planning/buying shops should continue to pitch. On top of that, Empower has had the account past average agency tenure (2.5-3 years), boosting the likelihood of a review further down the line.

Incumbent: WPP’s Y&R, Chicago had creative since 2011, according to The List.

Media Spend: FF’s ad budget plummeted last year. Kantar Media reports that measured media spend dropped to $9.4 million from $24 million due to a huge decline in broadcast outlays.

National TV Breakdown: Last year, $5.9 million went to national TV ads, all of which ran during the BTS period, according to iSpot.tv. Ads targeted female focused networks and programming like ABC’s “Good Morning America” and E!’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians and “I Am Cait,”

This is down from $19.3 million in 2014, when flights ran during the spring, BTS and winter holiday period.

Digital Breakdown: During the past year, 46 banners, 22 high impact and 11 video ads combined have appeared on about 2,100 publishers (<1% mobile), almost of which were placed programmatically versus site direct.

Desktop and video ads are mostly targeting news and entertainment sites like eoline.com, biography.com, history.com, somecards.com, usanetwork.com, bravotv.com, syfy.com, ebay.com, seattlepi.com, tv.com and foodnetwork.com, Moat reports.
