Campaign Imminent: CA Avocado Commission taps Mullen Lowe to increase brand awareness

Organization: California Avocado Commission, headquartered in Irvine, aims to increase national awareness of avocados on behalf of the state’s avocado growers.

Opportunity: Named IPG’s Mullen Lowe as its new creative agency and sibling MediaHub as media AOR, following a review. The first work from ML will debut early next year and is intended to reach “new audiences in new places.” The campaign utilizes an “integrated multi-platform approach” that includes digital and paid social. Therefore, sellers should reach out to secure early 2016 digital ad dollars and keep in mind that CAC has been pushing more into mobile, as well.

Experience: Creative and media had been with Amusement Park (LA) since 2007, according to The List. 

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, CAC spent $2.2 million on measured media in 2014 – down from $4.9 million in 2013. Note, however, that Q1 2015 spend was $30,600, a 188.8% increase from Q1 2014 ($10,600). Most of 2014′s spend was allocated to spot TV ($920,000) and print ($830,000), with the remainder dedicated to OOH ($298,000) and digital ($119,000).

Digital Breakdown: According to Moat, CAC has run three standard display ads on 19 publishers so far this year (53% mobile). Top ad destinations include cookchanneltv.com, foodnetwork.com, food.com, bhg.com and fitnessmagazine.com (86% of ads were placed client direct instead of programmatically). For the same period in 2014, 15 creatives were run on 10 publishers (20% mobile). Top ad destinations were roughly the same, though 97% of them were placed client direct.
