ExxonMobil promotes two execs
ExxonMobil Corporation announced two promotions for further leadership, according to the company
Andy Swiger will become senior vice president and a member of ExxonMobil’s management committee, effective April 1. He is currently president of ExxonMobil Gas and Power Marketing segment. Before that he was executive vice president of ExxonMobil production company. Swiger has also held several international leadership positions with ExxonMobil in Canada, Europe and Russia.
Upon Swiger’s change of positions, Tom Walters will become president of ExxonMobil gas and power marketing. Walters is currently executive vice president of ExxonMobil development company. Prior to that, he was president of ExxonMobil global services company.
Irving, Texas-based ExxonMobil is an energy and technology company that refines and markets petroleum-based products. It is divided into eight major groups, including: exploration, production, development, refining and supply, natural gas and power marketing, fuels marketing, and chemical and lubricants.
spokesperson Alan Jeffers told DailyVista Swiger will be based at company headquarters in Irving, and Walters will work out of its gas and power marketing offices in Houston.
He said ExxonMobil’s leadership is structured through a management committee at the senior corporate level. There are numerous affiliates and functional companies under that leadership, such as the gas and power marketing and the exploration groups.
Swiger will be a part of this committee in an overall management role. Walters will lead the natural gas and power marketing company as its president.
“The natural gas and power group looks after the sales of natural gas and electric forms of energy,” he said. “They’re responsible for long-term sales and contract agreements, generally speaking on a large-volume basis.”
Jeffers said ExxonMobil has such a diverse portfolio of companies and products, the marketing and advertising strategies will differ depending on what part of the company it is, and who its target audience is.
“Generally we use television ads, and newspaper ads are also something we do. We use media buyers to optimize our buy, mostly from a corporate perspective,” he said. “Direct to consumer is broader, it depends on the product.”
ExxonMobil’s overall corporate goal is to provide energy for the world’s economy’s needs for growth.
“Our Chief Executive Officer (Rex Tillerson) has done a lot of speaking about integrative approach and solutions to meet the energy challenge. Various projects on demand growth, it’s tied to economy activity, and significant growth in energy demand,” he said. “The challenge is how do we meet that, while ensuring that we’re managing greenhouse gases.”
Jeffers said ExxonMobil is committed to research on the next generation of bio-fuels and other energy sources that can have the desired impact, or lack of it, on the environment. The company also spends “a lot of time and effort” reducing its own carbon footprint.
According to the List database, New York-based DDB is the agency of record for ExxonMobil. The company also uses Coral Gables, Fla.-based Zubi Advertising for Hispanic advertising and New York-based Universal McCann for media buying.
According to The Nielsen Company, ExxonMobil spent about $71 million on media in 2007. About $20 million was spent on network television ads, about $15 million was spent on cable television ads and about $10 million was spent on national magazine ads.
Swiger will not be focused on marketing and advertising decisions, but will have some overall pull as a member of ExxonMobil’s management committee. Walters will have a big role in decision making for the gas and power marketing group. The company’s structure and wide range of products and services make for a variety of marketing and advertising needs, and opportunities. Interested agencies should find a niche within the giant energy company that matches up with its expertise.
