The Story
As it prepares to launch a new product, Web-based car marketing service Autobytel Inc. appointed David Armitage as its new vice president of advertising, according to the company.
 
Armitage was most recently senior vice president of advertising sales at viral video network Revver.com. Prior to that, he oversaw advertising and sales at auto buying guide Edmunds.com and its other entities. Armitage also has significant agency experience, working at firms including Young & Rubicam, Dentsu and Chiat/Day.
 
“David’s creative expertise in online automotive marketing and social networking strategy, coupled with his extensive career in advertising sales and the online industry will be of great advantage,” Chief Executive Officer Jim Reisenbach said in a statement. “I am very pleased that David has joined us in our mission to further enhance the value and diversity of our advertising services, and to expand them deeper into the automotive industry and beyond.”
 
Autobytel provides consumers with information needed to make smart auto purchases. Its flagship Web site offer model and manufacturer research tools, new and used buying guides, consumer alerts and more.
 
The Research
Armitage joins as Autobytel endeavors on the launch of a new product, MyRide.com. Joe Foster, a company spokesperson, outlined the company’s strategy for DailyVista.
 
“(Armitage’s) strategic focus on sales and innovative new advertising programs, coupled with his experience in online automotive marketing and social networking strategy will be of great advantage during the MyRide.com launch,” he said.
 
According to Foster, Autobytel’s current marketing strategy is to drive brand awareness primarily through advanced Web-based advertising solutions, but the company does employ other various marketing programs.
 
MyRide is the company’s latest consumer site, and is currently in public beta testing. The site is a hybrid of a social networking platform and a search engine, and also has an e-commerce function.
 
MyRide was launched as a way for Autobytel to better compete with similar companies like Vehix.com, Kelly Blue Book and Armitage’s alma mater Edmunds.com.
 
“I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the success of MyRide.com as it moves out of its Beta phase to broad market rollout, and most of all to our customers’ marketing success,” Armitage said in a statement.
 
According to The List database, Autobytel has no announced agency relationships.
 
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent about $120,000 on media in 2006. About $89,000 was put toward Internet advertising and about $30,000 on spot radio ads.
