Manufacturing company Honeywell shuffle execs

The Story
Technology and manufacturing company Honeywell International Inc. announced two leadership changes to boost its transportation business segment, according to the company.

Alexandre Ismail was named president and chief executive officer of Honeywell Transportation Systems. He was most recently president of Honeywell Turbo Technologies. Before that he was worldwide director of marketing and business development for the segment. Ismail also spent time in the company’s aerospace business unit in various senior-level marketing and strategic planning positions.

Additionally, Honeywell announced Adriane Brown will become senior vice president of energy strategy, responsible for developing and executing energy policy and market strategies. Brown was most recently president and CEO of Honeywell Transportation Systems, a position she held since 2005.

Morris Township, N.J.-based Honeywell designs technologies and manufactures products for residential and industrial buildings, automotive, aerospace and other specialty materials used in production of a variety of products and industries.

The Research
In a statement, Honeywell Chairman and CEO Dave Cote said he was expecting Ismail and Brown to continue to make significant contributions to the company’s long-term success.

“Alex has helped manage the business during periods of tremendous growth, positioning Honeywell as the world's leading manufacturer of turbochargers,” Cote said. “He will continue to drive growth of turbochargers globally, while improving their adoption in the United States, where turbochargers are found only on 5 percent of light vehicles compared to 51 percent in Europe."

The company’s turbocharger technology is a method to provide smaller cars with smaller engines the power and acceleration capabilities previously only available through large, environmentally-unfriendly engines.

Honeywell expects the “small car”, which is currently growing at an estimated rate of 33 percent annually, to expand by more than 50 percent over the next five years.

“Auto manufacturers see downsizing as a fundamental strategy for the future, and under these circumstances, power density for ever smaller engines is the name of the game,” Honeywell Small Diesel Platform Manager Giorgio Figura said in a statement.

The company recently reported 2009’s first quarter sales at $7.6 billion, compared to $8.9 billion in the same quarter of 2008.

According to the List database, San Francisco-based advertising agency Doremus & Company currently works with Honeywell.

The Nielsen Company reports Honeywell spent about $3.8 million on media in 2008. About $2.2 million was spent on national magazine ads, about $1 million was spent on network radio ads and about $332,000 was spent on spot radio ads.

The Direction
Honeywell has a diverse product portfolio, as well as a diverse customer base. Interested agencies should consider finding an area it can offer some experienced advice in. The turbocharger product in relations to a struggling auto industry may be of particular importance to the company.
