Opportunity: We’ve received a tip that 3M has taken consumer media buying in-house. We haven’t been able to verify this 100%, but we wanted to keep you posted since new decision makers are likely managing ad dollars and the account could be in play. Often, marketers say media is in-house when they’re in the midst of a review, so start sending feeler emails now. We hear the change is coming because Grey is getting out of the media buying business, meaning creative likely isn’t in play. But you never know. We’ve seen plenty of long-term relationships end the past two years. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. 

The bulk of 3M’s consumer advertising runs  during Q2 and Q3; however, the company also runs a large amount of ads in Q4. Focus on top spending consumer brands like Command, Scotch Tape and Post-it.

Incumbent: WPP’s Grey Group, NY, has been creative and media AOR since 1984, according to The List.

Media Spend: Last year, $27.7 million went to measured media, led by Command ($10 million), Scotch Tape (almost $6 million) and Post-it ($2.4 million), according to Kantar Media. TV made up the majority of the brands’ spending, followed by display, radio and outdoor. 

TV Breakdown: Per iSpot.tv, here’s what the brands have spent on national TV the last 12 months: Command ($13 million – see targeting right), Scotch ($4.4 million, all of which was allocated June-August 2015) and Post-It ($2.5 million, all of which was spent during August). 

Digital Breakdown: Desktop display share-of-voice for the three brands is Scotch – 79%, Post-it – 13% and Command – 8%., according to Moat. All three run most of their ads on news, entertainment and education publishers like ehow.com, livestrong.com, diynetwork.com, marthastewart.com, hgtv.com, cnn.com and healthnation.com. 

Of the three, Scotch is the only one with a noteworthy mobile presence, but video SOV is split almost 45%/45% between Scotch and Command. I guess Command wants to make the most of its MC Hammer investment. Video is targeting the same site mix, led by hgtv.com, biography.com, history.com, marthastewart.com, cnn.com.
