Beam’s media mix still skews heavily towards TV, but it has placed more emphasis on digital since hiring here). However, still keep in mind that spirits have to be careful where and how (site direct vs. programmatically) they place ads due to regulations around marketing booze and potential PR pitfalls. For example, no alcohol brand wants to show up next to a DUI news story by accident. So, drinking age male millennial focused entertainment (especially music) and sports sellers should have a huge advantage, given bourbon’s core target demos. We hear 2015 is already planned out so focus your energy more on securing revenue for 2016.

Additional Insight

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Beam Suntory spent $49.4 million on measured media in 2014 – down 13.3% from 2013, according to Kantar Media. The majority of this was allocated to broadcast ads (75.9%), while the remainder was mainly divided between digital (11.9%) and print (11.1%) ads.  Jim Beam, at $21.3 million, received most of the ad support last year, followed by Maker’s Mark ($9.9 million), Sauza Tequila ($8.7 million), Knob Creek ($4.8 million) and Skinnygirl ($2.6 million).

Jim Beam TV Breakdown: Since January, $14.3 million has gone to national TV ads (see targeting right), almost twice what was spent over the same period last year, according to iSpot.tv. For all of 2014, $10.9 million went to national TV compared to $12.3 million.

Jim Beam Digital Breakdown: So far this year 68 display ads, 203 high impact ads, 18 video ads have run on 106 publishers (26% mobile), 85% of which were placed site direct compared to programmatically, Moat reports.

Desktop activity, almost non-existent until July, has largely been wit arts & entertainment sites like thedissolve.com, celebuzz.com, pitchfork.com, purevolume.com, maxim.com, bleacherreport.com and askmen.com. Mobile has been mostly with lifestyle news sites such as maxim.com, esquire.com and vibe.com.

Video has run on 174 publishers across the same mix as desktop and mobile. Top sites include nba.com, huffingtonpost.com, moviefone.com, vh1.com, nascar.com, topix.com and aol.com.
