BET hires chief digital officer to lead mobile, social, digital strategy
Subject: Digital, social media, mobile
Company: BET Networks, the subsidiary of Viacom provides entertainment, music, news and public affairs television programming for the African-American audience.
Opportunity: Hired Kay Madati as chief digital officer to lead teams responsible for all aspects of digital, social and mobile strategy and oversee operations, content creation, technology and product development. Readers in digital and social media should approach given’s BET’s efforts to more fully embrace viewers’ multi-screen behavior.
Experience: Most recently, Madati was head of entertainment and media on Facebook's global marketing solutions team. Before Facebook, he was VP of audience experience and engagement at CNN and VP of marketing at Interactive One. At Facebook, Madati led the team that helped position the company as key strategic partner for digital and social solutions with film studios, TV networks and entertainment companies, according to Variety.
Priorities: Reporting to Debra Lee, chairman and CEO, Madati oversees BET Digital, whose platforms include BET.com, which comprises entertainment, music, culture, and news; BET Mobile, provides apps, ringtones, games and video content for wireless devices; Centric.tv, the online home for the Centric cable channel; and BET Video On Demand, one of the largest VOD services providing African-American content.
Keep a close eye on 24-hour entertainment and music channel Centric because it was rebranded earlier this year as the first network for African American women, with programming designed to appeal directly to them. The centerpiece of the new positioning is an exclusive co-production deal with Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment to produce new content for Centric.
Target Audiences: Overall, BET’s view profile skews towards women (57%/43% female/male split) 35-to-54-years old with a median household income of $50,000.
Media Spend: BET allocated $7.2 million towards measured media last year, a 25% increase from $5.7 million in 2012. Spending skews towards local radio and cable TV buys.
