The Story
TV Guide magazine announced the promotion of Scott Crystal to the role of President and Chief Executive Officer, according to MinOnline.com.
 
Prior to adding CEO to his title, Crystal served as president and publisher at the New York-based company. Before joining the magazine, he served as president and CEO of Gruner & Jahr USA Publishing’s Business Innovator Group.
 
Crystal also has previously held the role of executive vice president and publishing director of the Consumer Magazine Group at Ziff Davis Media Inc. and has been vice president and publishing director at National Geographic Society Inc.
 
TV Guide International Inc., a segment of Macrovision, is a media, entertainment and technology company that develops, licenses, markets and distributes products and services targeted at the television guidance and home entertainment needs of television viewers worldwide.
 
The Research
Crystal will be charged with managing the introduction of TV Guide’s new Web site, as well as overseeing all of the company’s business components to gauge future additions and expansions.
 
Crystal’s new leadership role as CEO is a newly created position.
 
The new Web site is an initiative that is in the works for 2009, in conjunction with the sale of TV Guide.
 
TV Guide was sold to OpenGate Capital, a Beverly Hills-based private equity firm, which was finalized about a week ago (DailyVista article). The company’s Web site was not sold, but OpenGate assumed $70 million to $100 million in subscription liabilities, and advertising is continuing its downturn, as it is with most publications.
TV Guide will launch its companion Web site Called TVGuideMagazine.com early next year. It’s a new site that will feature blogs, chats and behind the scenes content from TV Guide magazine cover shoots, but will not have television listings.
 
According to The List database, Dallas-based The Richards Group Inc. has served as TV Guide’s agency of record since 2003, and New York-based Freud Communications is currently handling its public relations initiatives.
 
Nielsen Monitor-Plus reported that the company spent about $60,000 on national advertising in 2007, which was split evenly between Internet and local newspaper ads.
