GameStop's Web focused strategy lets it market products 'too big' for stores

By Erik McNeal
Staff Writer
Bartel said Gamestop continues to work closely with publishing partners to ensure that gamers have a full menu of purchase options at each launch, beyond just the game and related DLC. The Web in-store allows GameStop to keep less inventory on hand at stores.

“So, what we are learning to do, like I talked about in the franchise marketing effort, is market things that are too big for our stores, that are very unique,” he said during the conference call. “It helps our inventory position because we don't have to send it out in the U.S. to 4,400 stores. We can keep it centrally located, and we can get it to the customer very, very quickly. “

Gamestop’s PowerUp Rewards program and partnerships with video game publishers and console makers feed into these franchise marketing efforts, Bartel added.

CEO J. Paul Raines stated that Gamestop had about 40 percent trade awareness with consumers, “in spite of all … the work on marketing.”

GameStop’s gross revenue, at $1.865 billion, and net income, at $54.6 million, were both down year-over-year in the first quarter. Net income last year for the same quarter was $72.5 million.

GameStop's hardware and software market share have increased dramatically in the past few years, particularly in PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

“We've driven this market share through building loyalty programs, with nearly 24 million members in the U.S. and nearly 30 million total globally, and by developing our relationships and marketing programs with our publisher and console partners,” said Robert Lloyd, CFO and EVP. “These factors give us great confidence in our ability to take advantage of growth in the next console cycle.

Last year, GameStop spent $23.31 million on measured media, the majority of which was spent on cable TV ads at 8.81 million, according to Kantar Media. In 2011, the company’s media spend was $30.14 million.
