Rumor: Canon begins planning for Q4, 2016?

Opportunity: We’ve received word that B2C media AOR, WPP’s 360i is involved more with buying for B2B, scanners and printers, according to The List.

It’s last minute but reach out immediately, especially if you need extra Q4 revenue. But, also keep an eye out for digital ad dollars in Q2, Canon’s secondary buying period. Lifestyle, shopping, technology, video and sport sellers may have an edge given Canon’s display targeting preferences this year.

Media Spend: Canon spent $46.6 million on measured media last year, down 42% from $80 million in 2013. 2014 spending was led by broadcast at $23.5 million, which only declined from $29 million in 2013. Instead, Canon’s ad spending decline last year was led by a huge decrease in magazine outlays, where spending returned to historical levels (about $9 million), from $35 million in 2013, according to Kantar Media.

Digital Breakdown: Canon has allocated about $12 million annually towards digital (mostly display) since 2013. Last year, activity was low in H1 and picked up in June before spiking in November for the holiday push. 

Since January, 137 display ads have run with 94 publishers (3% mobile), 86% of which was placed site direct instead of programmatically. Desktop activity has been highest with lifestyle sites like and, but shopping and media sites are running a fair amount of ads, as well.

TV Breakdown: Canon hasn’t run any national TV ads this year, after spending $14.6 million over the same period last year. For all of 2014, $27.5 million was spent on two national TV flights (May-July and Oct-Dec), up from $19 million over 2013.
