Update (10/30): We’ve been told that Cramer-Krasselt, NY also picked up media planning and buying, along with creative, after a review (more info below). With the agency’s first work slated to launch in the spring, possibly as soon as late Q4, sellers should start putting pitches together now.

Look for ad spending to be back up behind a revival campaign. Nikon, like all camera companies, is in a tough situation – The rise of smartphones is crushing low-end digital camera sales. Simultaneously, the rough economy is making new premium camera purchases a hard sell, especially for people who already own a digital camera.

With a new campaign set to launch in the spring, perhaps as soon as late December, a new media shop could already be on board or will be announced shortly. We'll keep you posted.

Incumbent: Initiative handles traditional planning and buying. 

Media Spend: Nikon's ad spending has fallen substantially since 2012. Last year, $17.3 million went to measured media, down $30.6 million in 2013 and $85.5 million 2012, according to Kantar Media. The declines last year were due largely to plummeting broadcast and display budgets. Last year, broadcast fell to $500,000 from $10.9 million in 2012, but TV outlays did reach $7.2 million in Q1 alone, Kantar Media reports. Display activity is also back on the rise, after falling to $829,000 last year from $3.4 million in 2013. 

Digital Breakdown: Nikon's display presence in 2015 is much higher than last year's, according to 

Video activity stopped at the end of March and was primarily with news and technology/computer sites. However, at the publisher level, refinery29.com shows the majority of Nikon video activity, Moat reports.

TV Breakdown: Since January, $9.4 million has supported Nikon camera TV ads (see spending breakdown right), up from only $284,000 over the same period last year, according to iSpot.tv
