Microsoft appoints former Best Buy exec to head its Consumer Channels Group

Subject: traditional, digital, online, outdoor, social media, B2B

Company: Microsoft,  the leading computing software, operating systems and solutions company.

Opportunity: Hired new VP of consumer channels group in expanded effort to increase Microsoft products’ appeal. Be sure your approach ties Microsoft products to innovation and highlights the brand’s value.

Additional Insight

Experience: Microsoft has appointed a new corporate vice president of consumer channels group, Jude Buckley. Buckley most recently served as chief commercial officer of Best Buy, a position he resigned in May after only six months.  In his new role, Buckley will be responsible for Microsoft’s sales and marketing activities with OEMs, operators and retail partners.  This appointment comes just after the announcement that Microsoft plans to layoff 18,000 employees in the next 12 months

CMO Chris Capossela had been functioning as interim head of the consumer channels group, which was created in 2009. When Buckley takes over the role, he will report to Kevin Turner, chief operating officer. According to Turner, the focus going forward will be on “selling to businesses, selling to consumers and selling to advertisers.”  As  DailyVista pointed out earlier this year, your approach should focus on broader consumer and business focused campaigns that tie Microsoft to innovation as the company tries to drive awareness of its products and gain a higher percentage of marketshare from competitors (research here).

Media Spend: In 2013, Microsoft’s media spend was approximately $846.4 million, up $156 million from 2012 and $286 million from 2011. While Microsoft is streamlining its business, media spend continues to grow year-over-year, so look for opportunities as the company tries to highlight and deliver its value through advertising and other channels.

Agency Relationships: As DailyVista reported in April, Microsoft recently updated its agency roster. Interpublic shops like here).
