Rumor Update: EDMC taps new media agency for Art Institutes, Argosy University, South University?

Update (1/15): Our sources tell us that Publicis's South University (online and 11 campuses in the Southeast and Michigan and Ohio). We haven’t been able to verify this 100%, but we wanted to keep you in the loop. Art Institutes is by far Pittsburgh-based EDMC’s largest school, representing 53% of total enrollments, followed by Argosy at 19% and South at 15%.  Therefore, continue to pitch traditional direct response for Art Institutes but focus more on digital direct response for Argosy and South.

Subject: Digital, TV, radio, print, email, direct mail

Company: Education Management Corp (EDMC) that focuses on applied arts in creative professions such as graphic design, animation, culinary arts, photography, interior design, video production, audio production and fashion design. As of Oct. 2013, Art Institutes represented 53% of EDMC's total enrollments and had 51 campuses in 25 states and Canada.

Opportunity: We hear that the for-profit school is moving media planning and buying from Interpublic's DigitasLBi, Boston by the end of the year. We haven't been able to confirm this rumor 100%, but we wanted to pass the info along. Like most for-profits, Art Institutes is struggling to attract and retain students, and parent EDMC is in hot water with regulators and courts over whether it mislead students to collect federal student loan dollars. Still, EDMC management has said a key area for improvement in fiscal 2015 is optimizing marketing and admissions effectiveness, so continue to approach with innovative digital and direct response strategies. Note that EDMC's fiscal year ends in March.

Additional Insight

Looking specifically at the Art Institutes, its net revenues fell to $1.38  billion in FY 2014 from $1.54 billion in FY 2013, as average enrollment dropped 8.1% to 61,070 over the same period.

Marketing Focus: EDMC relies on natural, paid search and display ads to reach prospective students, along with traditional channels like TV, radio, newspaper, e-mail and direct mail campaigns.
