Station Casinos accepts billion dollar buyout

The Story
Casino operator Station Casinos announced that two private equity firms are acquiring it, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Las Vegas-based Station agreed to a $8.8 billion buyout proposed by Fertitta Colony Partlers LLC, a newly-formed consortium comprised of real estate firm Colony Capital LLC and the family of Station’s chairman and chief executive officer Frank Fertitta III.

A source told the Journal that Station’s management will likely go unchanged once the deal closes in six to nine months and that the company is expected to form a subsidiary.

Las Vegas-based Station Casinos operates 16 casinos located in the suburbs of large cities like Las Vegas, Sante Fe, N.M. and Boulder, Colo. The company caters to residents instead of tourists and offers a range of gaming activities including video poker, slots, sports betting and bingo.

Los Angeles-based Colony Capital owns several casinos and hotels, including the Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J. Hiltons.

The Research
Station Casinos is the fourth casino company to go private in the last year.

In December Harrah’s Casino was sold for $17.1 billion (DailyVista article). In January, Colony Capital acquired casino operation Aztar Corp. for a reported $2.1 billion.

“These companies are starting to be seen for their real estate value,” analyst Dan Ahrens told Bloomberg News. “Most businesses that private equity looks at aren’t sitting on some of the most valuable real estate in the U.S.”

In addition to its gaming facilities, Station has about 700 acres of undeveloped land in Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., valued at a reported $1.5 billion.

According to The List database, Station Casinos has no announced creative agency relationships.

According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent about $3 million on measured media in 2005. About $1.5 million went to spot television ads, about $1 million for outdoor placement and about $200,000 for national magazine advertising.

The Direction
Firms experienced in direct marketing, promotions or public relations should keep Station Casinos on the radar. When the dust settles from this acquisition, the company could be looking to up its marketing presence with the help of an agency. Branding firms that can help the company develop identities for properties to come should make introductions now.
