Streaming video pioneer RealNetworks appoints marketing VP amid global expansion, revival efforts
We told you last month about digital entertainment service provider RealNetworks’ plans to launch a global consumer awareness campaign behind its new “Dropbox for videos” service. Now, they’ve hired a new VP of marketing to help lead the charge.
Doug Wheeler, formerly the executive leader of Good Karma Marketing, joins the Internet pioneer in the midst of a revival. The company just made RealPlayer Cloud, its cloud-based video sharing service, available globally after offering it in North America only for the last five months, and it’s working to partner with “top tier carriers” in order to increase its B2B footprint worldwide. RealPlayer Cloud, which launched in September, enables users to view, move and share videos across PCs, tablets,smartphones and streaming services like Chromecast and Roku.
As we shared before, RealNetworks looks wide open for new business engagement opportunities because of the global launch and a recently business overhaul geared towards making it top-of-mind again. Start engaging Wheeler now to see where supplemental ad opportunities and new partnership opportunities exist. Expect RealNetworks’ media mix to focus on social advertising, paid search and PR for now before expanding into higher spend areas. The company already has 500,000 users for RealPlayer Cloud in the U.S. and Canada, and it wants to acquire many more.
Kantar Media reports that RealNetwork's measured media spend was $5.2 million through the first half of 2013. Spend has slipped in the last three years, falling from $15.7 million in 2011 to $9.2 million in 2012.
