Digital, Mobile Opps: Guitar Center names new top marketer (Score 64)

Company: Guitar Center, Westlake Village, Calif.-based musical instrument retailer with 262 locations.  

Opportunity: Named Frank Crowson as SVP of marketing. He will lead GC’s marketing strategy and work closely with EVP of merchandising, marketing and e-Commerce Michael Amkreutz. “Frank’s marketing and merchandising experience and unique skill set will be a massive asset to the expansion and growth of Guitar Center’s brand and our family of retail channels,” said Amkreutz in a press release.  Amkreutz  joined GC in October 2014 (more here). Those with ideas for how to help the struggling brand reach out as Crowson begins to piece together a strategy. Look specifically for digital and mobile opportunities, as GC has significantly increased its display/mobile presence since last year (keep in mind that Q4-Q1 is a large spend period for GC).

Experience: Crowson joins from Target, where he served as VP of marketing for promotion strategy and weekly ads.   

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, GC spent $21.5 million on measured media in 2014  - down 13.5% from 2013. Over half of this was allocated to broadcast ads ($13.2 million), while most of the remainder was dedicated to radio ($3.5 million).

iSpot indicates that GC has spent $3.9 million on national TV ads so far this year. The most money has been spent to air ads on Cartoon Network, FOX, TBS, Comedy Central and Spike during shows such as “Anger Management,” “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” “Cops,” “American Dad” and “South Park.” For the same period 2014, GC spent $7.9 million on national TV ads targeted toward the same channels and shows.

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that GC has run 172 standard display ads on 3,318 publishers (7% mobile). Top ad destinations include: guitarcenter.com, stereogun.com, guitarplayer.com, youtube.com and guitarworld.com. For the same period 2014, GC ran 72 creatives on 211 publishers. Note, too, that in 2014, only 11 mobile ads were run – for 2015, that number has increased to 240.
