Score 44 – Future Possibility: The Hartford promotes CMO to lead new team, media account on the m...

Subject: Digital, online, social media, mobile, TV, print, outdoor, radio

Company:

Opportunity: Promoted company veteran Kathy Bromage to chief marketing and communications officer, effective June 1. Reporting to Christopher Swift, chairman and CEO, she will lead a newly combined enterprise marketing and communication team, so look for media optimization to be top-of-mind. Kantar Media data shows that print spending plummeted 77% last year compared to 2013, as The Hartford’s dollars moved to TV and digital, mainly search. Also, digital spend is moving more towards programmatic (more info below). Therefore, approach with integrated broadcast and online/digital platforms that will help The Hartford engage “an increasingly consumer-driven market,” as President Doug Elliot put it during the Q4 earnings call. Ad sellers with high engagement rates among small businesses owners, enterprise insurance decision makers and consumers (auto and homeowner decision makers) should have the advantage.

Furthermore, we’ve received mixed reports of whether Omnicom’s PHD is still handling planning and buying for The Hartford, so look for potential opportunities to scoop up the media account, as well.

Additional Insight

Experience: Bromage, who joined the insurer in 2006, has been The Hartford’s CMO and SVP for the Small Commercial Insurance segment since 2012. Before that she was e-business SVP, leading The Hartford’s digital marketing activities.

Media Spend Breakdown: Digital, mainly search, makes up the majority of The Hartford’s ad budget, followed by broadcast, radio and out-of-home (OOH). ISpot.tv reports that the insurer spent $5.4 million on national TV ads last year (see targeting breakdown right), up from $1.8 million in 2013. TV activity last year lasted from Jan.-September, with spikes in May-July.

On the standard display front, The Hartford ran ads with 1,855 publishers last year (2% mobile),  65%  of which was bought by ad networks or exchanges versus the publishers directly, Moat reports. This was up from 1,204 publishers (<1% mobile) in 2013, 74% of which was purchased direct from publishers instead of by ad networks or exchanges. This is almost a complete 180 over only a years time. Interesting…

Last year, display activity spiked in July, September and November. The following domains reported the most impression activity in 2014: about.com, bizjournals.com, aarp.org (a partner organization), forbes.com, manta.com, how.com, marketwatch.com, washingtontimes.com and nytimes.com.

Other Decision Maker Movement: Laura Marzi, assistant VP for marketing, communications and sponsorships, was promoted to marketing VP in February.
