Company: Prudential Financial, the Newark, NJ-based provider of finance and insurance-related products.

Opportunity: Prudential has appointed Hema Widhani to the role of CMO of digital and customer marketing. In this role, Widhani oversees all digital marketing for the finance and insurance provider. So far this year, Prudential has run 317 standard display ads on over 2,000 publishers (<1% mobile), so Widhani has her hands full (according to Droga5 is creative AOR.

Additional Insight

Experience: Widhani joins Prudential from Citibank, where she served as head of digital customer experience.  She has also served as SVP of customer engagement at E*Trade. Last April, Prudential also added a new CMO for its Insurance Group – Michelle Crecca (more here).

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Prudential spent $109.1 million on measured media in 2014 – $22.3 million of which was allocated to digital channels (mainly display). Other spend breaks down as such broadcast ($42.3 million); print ($31.6 million); and out-of-home ($12.8 million). Radio, Hispanic and sponsorship received minimal spend by comparison.

Digital Breakdown: Jan-June 2014 saw Prudential run 698 standard display ads on 3,127 publishers, which means Prudential’s digital presence has decreased by 36% in 2015. However, top ad destinations stayed largely the static.

National TV Spend: Per iSpot, Prudential has spent $20.8 million on national TV ads so far this year. The most money has been spent to air ads on NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox News and CNN during shows such as “Figure Skating,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Wheel of Fortune,” “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” and “Jeopardy!” This is up 43% from the same period 2014, when Prudential spent $14.5 million, targeting roughly the same networks and shows.
