Score 38: Future Possibility – Equifax promotes CMO

Subject: digital, print, radio, outdoor

Company: Equifax, headquartered in Atlanta, is one is the nation’s largest consumer credit reporting agencies.

Opportunity: Equifax announced that Trey Loughran will become the company’s CMO, taking over for Paul Springman, who is retiring.  Loughran will report to CEO Richard Smith and will be responsible for all core marketing functions, including product management and innovation, data and analytics, brand, communications, pricing and strategic marketing. Loughran previously served as president of Equifax Personal Information Solutions. Smith also noted in a press release that Equifax is focused on “investing in top talent and building internal bench-strength” to ensure seamless succession planning. Given that focus, the likelihood of sweeping strategy changes are slim, but not nonexistent, so reach out now as Loughran settles into his new role. Millennial engagement should be top priority. Note that rival Experian Consumer Services also recently named a new CMO  (research here).

Additional Insight

Experience: Prior to serving as president, Loughran was SVP of corporate development for Equifax. Before joining the company, Loughran held various strategy and marketing leadership positions with BellSouth.

Competitors:  Experian and TransUnion are Equifax’s largest nationwide competition. For a list of various credit reporting agencies, check here.

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Equifax spent $31.1 million on measured media in 2014. This is a 16.5% decrease from 2013 ($37.2 million).  In 2014, Equifax spent $29.3 million on digital (split evenly between display and search). The remainder of 2014 was allocated to print ($1.3 million); out-of-home ($511,000) and radio ($2,440). While spending decreased in digital, print and radio from 2013 to 2014, out-of-home spend almost quadrupled in the same period (jumping from $136,645 to $511,150). Note that over the last three years (2012, 2013, 2014), Equifax has shifted spend around and has not consistently spent money in one quarter over another.

According to Moat, only 7% of Equifax’s 2014 standard display ads were purchased directly from the publisher last year. Top ad destinations included: aol.com, streeteasy.com and whitepages.com

Agency Relationships: According to The List, 360i, LLC has been Equifax’s creative and media AOR since 2013.
