Sodexo facility management buys medical service Comfort Keepers

The Story
Food and facilities management services provider Sodexo has acquired 100 percent of Comfort Keepers, a provider of non-medical in-home services in North America, according to CallCenterInfo.com.

The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Gaithersburg, Md.-based Sodexo said that this acquisition reinforces its “Quality of Life” services that it offers to seniors and better positions the company as a global leader in the seniors segment.

Comfort Keepers is an in-home service care business that operates through a franchise network of 550 agencies throughout the United States.

Sodexo is a leading foodservice operator with a stake in corporate dining and hospitality, event concessions and institutional foodservices as well. Sodexo also provides office beverage services, convenience store vending and facilities management services.

The Research

She said that it is Sodexo’s vision to become a premier global outsourcing expert in Quality of Life services.

“The acquisition of Comfort Keepers is fully in line with this strategy, allowing Sodexo to offer a wide range of services to people needing assistance at home,” she said.

Our source added that 25 percent of Sodexo’s revenues are generated by its senior care and health care businesses, in which Sodexo is globally renowned.

“In the senior living market, we presently provide a wide range of quality of life services like food and nutrition services, building services, health and wellness programming, grounds maintenance and laundry and linen services,” she said.

She said the expertise that this acquisition provides for Sodexo is “highly complementary” with the company’s current portfolio of services and she is hopeful that it will “generate great synergies.”

The spokesperson said that Sodexo believes the Comfort Keepers brand name is a strong one, and a highly-recognizable, trusted brand in the communities it serves.

“We will continue to develop and enhance it in the future,” she said.

Our source said that any additional questions regarding the next few steps of this integration would be better addressed by the U.S. team or at the group level.

According to The List database, Durham, N.C.-based Fusion Multicultural has served as Sodexo’s Hispanic marketing agency since 2001, and New York-based Burson-Marsteller is its public relations agency of record.

Chicago-based Sanderson PR is currently handling Comfort Keepers’ public relations efforts.

The Nielsen Company reported that Sodexo spent about $700,000 on measured media in 2008. About $300,000 was spent on national magazine ads, $270,000 was spent on Internet ads and about $110,000 was spent on national Sunday supplements.

The Direction
Agencies may find a unique opportunity here to assist both with companies’ efforts, seeing as Sodexo will be responsible for continuing to build the Comfort Keepers brand moving forward. Keep the company on your radar and reach out when the timing is right.
