Publix Supermarkets' Aprons, GreenWise concepts grow


The Story
Southeastern grocery chain Publix announced it is expanding two of its current store concepts, according to the South Florida Business Journal

The Lakeland, Fla.-based company will open six new Publix GreenWise Markets, a natural and organic products store format. The company also said it is growing its Publix Apron’s service with a new concept dubbed Make-Ahead meals.
  
Seeking presence in the growing natural food retailing market, Publix is opening its first GreenWise Market in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in the fall. The company plans to open five additional stores this year.
 
As an expansion of Publix Apron's, which currently includes Recipes, Simple Meals and Cooking Schools. Make-Ahead Meals lets customers register online for a meal preparation class. At the session, ready-made ingredients are prepared and packaged for customers to freeze for later use. The company is also offering a call-ahead service for shoppers on the go.
 
"We are always looking for ways to offer a variety of products in convenient locations," Publix spokesperson Maria Brous said in a statement. "These programs will allow us to provide our customers with more value and convenience." 
 
The privately held company operates over 900 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. In addition to its flagship brand and recent additions, Publix has a Hispanic concept dubbed Publix Sabor, which has two locations in south Florida.
 
The Research
Dwaine Stevens, Publix spokesperson, told DailyVista that the latest additions to the Apron’s and GreenWise concepts are still in development and that the company may expand into new markets following the test runs.
 
Stevens said Publix is going to combine public relations and marketing to spread the word about the new store concepts. He also said that the company is always open to agencies making approaches, although they are happy with their current relationship.
 
The store expansions come after a gainful first quarter at Publix. First quarter sales increased 6.7 percent to $5.9 billion and same store sales increased 5.1 percent.
 
According to The List database, Tampa, Fla.-based WestWayne has been Publix’s agency of record since 1989.
 
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent about $50.1 million on measured media in 2006. About $25.6 million was spent on spot television, about $16.6 million was spent on local newspaper ads and about $4 million went to spot radio advertising.
 
The Direction

Depending on the success of these latest endeavors, Publix may look to add new concepts to its lineup in the future and need firms to assist in getting them off the ground.
