Subway expanding mobile efforts drastically next year


Subway Readies Global Mobile Push: Subway is preparing a global mobile marketing and mCommerce push, and plans to roll out transactional HTML5-based websites and applications in the U.S. and other territories starting early next year.
 
The quick-serve sandwich chain has dabbled with mobile marketing activity in the past –  including display ads from vendors such as Apple's iAd unit – but this initiative will represent the largest investment the brand has made in the mobile arena to date.
 
This comes after the chain Velti to serve as its mobile technology provider last month.
 
With Velti, Subway plans to launch location-aware mobile websites that allow customers to order and pay for meals to pick up at their closest location.
 
The company plans to have this system in place across most of its 24,000 U.S. stores by early next year, with a global rollout in 2012. Subway have more than 34,000 restaurants operating worldwide.
 
“We want to jump into this space now,” Subway’s Director of Digital Marketing Joost Zimmerman told ClickZ. “The adoption rate of smartphones has been tremendous, and it’s the right time to start really leveraging those devices for the brand.”
 
He added that Subway will also launch mobile applications for platforms including iOS and Android to go along with its new web presence.
 
Marketing for the new mobile products is still in the works but it will most likely include mobile ads, mobile sponsorships, in-store promotions and possibly television media, Zimmerman told the publication.
 
The List reports that Milford, Conn.-based Doctor’s Associates Inc., which owns, operates and franchises the Subway chain, works with several shops, including the following AORs:

According to Nielsen, Doctor’s Associates allocated $476 million towards Subway’s marketing efforts in 2010. About $168.5 million was spent on network television ads, about $142 million was spent on spot television ads and about $95 million was spent on cable television ads.
