Pharma firm Amgen falls short in Q4

The Story
Despite strong fourth quarter earnings, pharmaceutical firm Amgen faces a difficult marketing environment in 2007, according to BusinessWeek

The Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based company reported a paltry 1 percent increase in quarterly profit, short of Wall Street’s expectations. The company saw total revenue improve 17 percent to $3.8 billion. Annual sales also increased 15 percent, to $14.3 billion.

“I expect that we will continue on a solid growth path in 2007 while key products in our pipeline continue to progress,” Chief Executive Officer Kevin Sharer said in a statement.

Amgen researches and manufactures medicines used in treating many ailments including cancers, kidney disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Research
Despite posting a strong final quarter, Amgen faces tough competition and product challenges this year.

In seeking new uses for its already popular drug Aranesp, Amgen hit a snag.

In testing for Aranesp, used on patients with cancer-related anemia, the company unexpectedly found a “statistically significant” increased death rate among volunteers.

This year Enbrel, Amgen’s psoriasis and arthritis treatment, saw both disappointing sales and strong competition from Abbott Laboratories’ Humira. Swiss pharma giant Roche Holding Pending is also nipping at Amgen’s heels, as it plans to launch a rival for Aranesp after government approval.

According to The List database, the company handles much of its creative in-house, but does outsource some work.

According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, Amgen spent about $157.7 million on measured media in 2005. About $80.8 million went to cable television advertising and about $37.4 million on network television placement. The company spent around $16.4 million on national magazine advertising.

The Direction
B-to-B firms with health care capabilities should definitely keep Amgen on the radar in coming months. The company is battling against other big name firms for pharmaceutical supremacy, and will need the help of experienced firms to drive brand adoption among health care providers. Agencies that can develop strategies for driving brand loyalty among patients should also approach; an informative and engaging campaign touting Amgen products as the smartest and healthiest choice could beat back rivals.
