Traditional Media Opps: Pfizer Shifts $100 Million OTC Planning Duties To Carat

Opportunity: Consolidated media planning with Dentsu Aegis’s Assembly officially exits the business, so ad sellers should get in contact now with their Pfizer and Carat contacts to see if they can get a heads up on who’s moving to what brands.

Media Spend: Pfizer spends about $800-$900 million annually on measured media, more than half of which goes to broadcast ads, according to Kantar Media. Magazine buys make up about 28-30% of annual ad spend and the remaining 15%-20% is split between digital, Hispanic, radio and outdoor. About $100 million goes to the Consumer Healthcare Division.
Of Pfizer OTC’s brands, Advil currently receives the most ad support, with about $80-$90 million annually. About $68.2 million of this went to national TV ads last year (see breakdown right), up from $53.7 million in 20013, Moat reports that 72% of Advil’s display ads last year were bought directly from the publisher.
