Campaign Imminent: Weber grills hires Grey as first global AOR

Subject: Online, digital

Company: Weber, grill brand operated by Winmo profile).

Update (4/21): Reportedly has hired Grey, NY as its first global agency after a search. The WPP agency is responsible for consumer advertising , digital and activation marketing.  Father’s Day and summer grilling season is almost upon us, so look for Grey’s first campaign to launch shortly.

Focus your pitch on millennial male-focused digital and mobile revenue since spending for both has already been up recently (more info below). In fact, it doesn’t appear that Weber has run grill specific national TV ads since fall 2014, based on iSpot data (ad above). Sports and food/drink sellers should have the advantage, based on Weber's display presence the past year.

Weber’s media planning and buying still appears to be at Denver-based Explore Communications but we’ll keep you posted if we find out differently.

Below originally published March 17:

Opportunity: We've received a tip that digital RFPs should be issued shortly for upcoming Weber grill campaigns, which are likely tied to Father's Day and summer grilling season. Therefore, male focused digital sellers should make sure they're top-of-mind with contacts in-house and at Denver-based Explore Communications, Weber's digital media shop.

Sports and food/drink sellers should have the advantage, based on Weber's display presence the past year. Furthermore, look for upcoming campaigns to begin around May, but activity will likely be highest in July.

Keep in mind that Weber, which historically leaned mostly on TV ads, started ramping up display activity last year. As a result, grill speficis TV budgets fell dramatically compared to past years.

Additional Insight

Digital Breakdown: Last summer, shopping, news, sports, food/drink and entertainment publishers made up the bulk of Weber's display activity. Top desktop targets included samsclub.com, maxim.com, maxpreps.com, epicurious.com, walmart.com and bonappetit.com.

Mobile mostly targeted foodnetwork.com and food.com, while video skewed to cbssports.com and msn.com.

Overall, last summer banners, high impact and video appeared on about 266 publishers (3% mobile), 92% of which were placed site direct versus programmatic. Banners ran on about 156 sites and video appeared on almost 100 sites.

TV Breakdown: Last year, $757,400 supported national TV ads, all of which ran during May-August (see targeting right), according to iSpot.tv. All of these ads supported Weber BBQ sauces and seasonings, though creative did feature grills, of course.

This was a huge decline from the $2.2 million spent during 2014, when ads followed a similar flight pattern and focused on promoting Weber grills.
