Coleman offers new product lighting category

The Story
The next generation of flashlights has arrived, according to the New York Times.

The beam from light emitting diode, or L.E.D., flashlights is a far cry from that of traditional incandescent flashlights. Thanks to electricity flowing through semiconductor devices, L.E.D. flashlights provide bright, white light, last much longer and are nearly indestructible.

Prof. Nadarajah Narendran heads research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center in Troy, N.Y. Narendran told the Times that L.E.D. technology allows batteries to last much longer, but they are more expensive than regular incandescent bulbs.

“A flashlight with two D batteries and an incandescent bulb can be bought for less than $5,” Narendran said. “L.E.D. flashlights will typically be at least a few dollars more.”

Despite the expense, the long-lasting nature of the new light source promises to change the market.

The Research
We spoke to Ann Walden, associate public relations director at camping gear manufacturer Coleman Company in Wichita, Kan. Walden told us that Coleman has been manufacturing L.E.D. products for “a few years,” and that the company markets the product to a wide-ranging demographic.

According to their website, Coleman’s L.E.D. line is the most efficient and longest lasting of all the lighting products; a $3 L.E.D. keychain provides 100,000 hours worth of light and operates on two lithium batteries.

Walden said that there is no specific person handling marketing duties for Coleman’s L.E.D. products, and that work is divided among a team of executives.

Walden declined to name Coleman's current advertising agency. According to The List database, the company’s $15 to $20 million advertising account has been in review since June. Minneapolis-based Martin Williams previously served as Coleman’s agency of record. Coleman spent $8 million on advertising in 2004, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The Direction
Although the review process is already under way at Coleman, we suggest contacting marketing execs nonetheless. If nothing else, contact some of Coleman’s competitors, as there are plenty of corporations sure to jump onto the L.E.D. bandwagon. An outdoor campaign may work best, as this is where the target demographic is probably spending most of its time.
