Rumor Confirmed: Pitney Bowes launches first TV campaign in more than 20 years

Opportunity: Looks like our rumor from September was on the money! (research launched its new rebranding campaign today. Targeting C-suite executives, the $20 million integrated campaign includes three television ads – the first time Pitney has run TV in more than 20 years. “Craftsmen of Commerce” also includes a heightened digital presence featuring online ads, videos, social media and web content.

Therefore, since TV ads are running on national news and sports networks, offline and digital sellers should focus their pitch on those platforms. Bill Borrell, brand strategy and integrated marketing communications SVP, told Ad Age that Pitney is putting money into TV because Pitney has an “awareness issue.” So, there’s no reason for spending to slow down anytime soon. Basically, Pitney is known for office postage business and wants C-suite decision makers to better understand its full digital commerce capabilities.

Media Spend: This is the most Pitney has spent on an ad campaign in a long time. Pitney spent almost nothing on paid media last year, according to Kantar Media. In 2014, about $2 million supported advertising, double what it allocated in 2013. In 2014 and 2013, most of Pitney’s ad budget was directed to display ads. 

Digital Breakdown: Since January, 32 display ads have run on 374 publishers (<1% mobile), 99% of which has been placed programmatically instead of site direct. News sites like chron.com and washingtonpost.com have made up the bulk of activity, according to Moat.
