Updated Omnichannel Marketing Approach: Office Depot plans to develop a “single marketing approach” to retain customers, said CEO Roland Smith during the company's fourth quarter earnings call. That signals a deeper omnichannel approach on the horizon, which should create new digital, mobile and social revenue opportunities. Like rival Staples, Office Depot is struggling to compete with online retailers, primarily Amazon, so spending should continue to move towards online, e-commerce and loyalty initiatives.
Spending Reduction: Higher digital spending is also being fueled by Office Depot's plans to save $70-to-$100 million in advertising and marketing over the next three years, as part of $400-to-$600 million generated in synergies from the OfficeMax acquisition. Combined, Office Depot and OfficeMax spent $105 million on paid advertising last year, Kantar Media reports.
New Decision Makers: The review followed the appointment of Juliet Johansson as executive vice president and chief strategy officer (research here); Christine Buscarino’s rise to e-commerce marketing VP; and Michael Kirschner’s promotion to e-commerce EVP.
Also, earlier this summer Mark Crosby, formerly the president of CVS's pharmacy business, became president of North America. He oversees marketing, merchandising, e-commerce, real estate and supply chain functions in North America.
Competition: In June, rival Staples appointed Frank Bifulco to the newly created role of marketing EVP to lead marketing (research new logo, tagline and ad campaign to promote its assortment of products beyond office supplies.
