Boise Cascade wood products ups CFO to CEO title

The Story
Tom Carlile, current chief financial officer for lumber and engineered wood products manufacturer Boise Cascade Holdings, LLC, will assume the role of chief executive officer, according to the company.

Carlile, who will now assume a director role in addition to the top leadership position on Aug. 16, replaces Duane McDougall, who has served as CEO and chairman since December 2008. McDougall will remain as chairman of the board.

When McDougall became CEO, the demand for wood products was in rapid decline. While successfully leading the company through a number of difficult decisions on facility curtailments and cost reductions, he was also able to grow Boise Cascade through a series of mill acquisitions.

“It’s an honor to have this opportunity to guide Boise Cascade through these challenging business markets,” Carlile said in a company release. “Duane has helped us navigate through a difficult nine months and, fortunately, as chairman he will continue to provide us with his expertise in this business.”

Boise, Idaho-based Boise Cascade manufactures engineered wood products, plywood, lumber and particleboard and distributes a broad line of building materials, including wood products manufactured by the company.

The Research
Vice President of Human Resources and Public Relations John Sahlberg told DailyVista that Boise Cascade was making organizational changes, and Carlile was the most natural fit for the top leadership position.

“Tom has been one of our key leaders in developing the vision and the strategy for the company,” he said. “We will continue to focus on manufacturing and distributing building products and growing them opportunistically.”

Boise Cascade’s vision is to be the preferred supplier for its key constituents, Sahlberg said. He added that the company’s strategy is to “profitably grow our distribution and engineered wood products business while keeping all of our businesses cost competitive.”

He said that Boise Cascade implements extensive sales and marketing initiatives on a B-to-B level, but said that the company already enjoys “outstanding” brand awareness.

“Each business has its own marketing strategy to leverage that,” Sahlberg said. “We sell to wholesalers, retailers and builders and so we do not do any consumer marketing.”

Because the housing industry is a unique business, Sahlberg said that there is very little “demand pull” from consumers seeking one product in lieu of another.

“We have to offer and deliver a compelling business model that enables our customers to know that they can have 100 percent confidence in the quality and availability of our products with on-time delivery,” he said. “Our sales and marketing efforts are key, but exceeding our customers’ expectations is the key to our success.”

Given the current state of the economy, Sahlberg added that the housing industry remains one of the more challenged aspects, and the recovery of housing-related businesses has been very weak.

“We have focused on a business model where we will be profitable at the current, very reduced level of housing starts and yet be ready to accelerate production and distribution just in time when the housing industry turns – and it will,” he said. “Until that turn occurs, however, we have some very basic efforts to increase productivity and lower costs.”

The List database was unable to identify which agencies, if any, that Boise Cascade currently works with.

The Direction
It seems as though Boise Cascade has finally emerged from a rough patch that has left the entire housing market in weak shape. Agencies or corporate marketers with B-to-B expertise should keep this company on a short-term prospect list, giving Carlile enough time to assume his new executive role and determine the direction of Boise Cascade moving forward.
