UPDATE (12/7): We spoke with spokesman Pio del Castillo, who stated that while Mary Kay has reached out to certain firms regarding its social media business, specific plans and direction won't be formalized until after the company's leadership conference being held towards the end of January.
DailyVista asked whether Mary Kay would be open to relevant approaches now or after the conference and we're waiting for a response. Castillo said Mary Kay wasn't very happy that this information got out so early because there is still much to be planned and decided on from a strategy standpoint.
Therefore, it looks like it would be best to wait until after Mary Kay's conference to reach out. Then, they will have a much better idea of their direction and you'll be able to rise above the noise.
Makeup Giant Mary Kay Ramps Up Social, Mobile Efforts: After nearly 50 years of building its brand by knocking on doors, cosmetics company Mary Kay is plotting a major marketing shift, with plans to funnel a chunk of its budget into social media promotion and mobile commerce.
Ad Age is reporting that the company is in talks with a variety of agencies to pitch for its social-media business. Beginning in 2012, Mary Kay plans to roll out customizable web tools onto the iPhone, iPad and Droid platforms, the publication reports.
DailyVista reached out to Mary Kay Friday to at least confirm this information, but did not receive an immediate reply.
If this is true, this would be quite a change of pace for Mary Kay since the company has traditionally relied on recruiting sellers and word-of-mouth to promote the brand.
Nielsen reported that Mary Kay allocated almost $3.7 million towards advertising in 2010. About $1.2 million was spent on cable television ads, about $1 million was spent on spot television ads and about $638,000 was spent on Spanish language network television ads.
This search isn’t expected to affect Parsippany, N.J.-based Conye PR, Mary Kay’s public relations AOR.
