American Power Corp. appoints new CMO


The Story
American Power Conversion Corp. announced the hire of a new marketing head, according to Providence (R.I.) Business News.
 
APC promoted Aaron Davis to vice president of communications and chief marketing officer. He will oversee the general branding and marketing strategies for the West Kingston, R.I.-based company.
 
“We believe this organizational change will ensure continued excellence in global brand building and more efficient demand creation,” Rob Johnson, chief executive officer said in a statement.
 
Davis has been with APC for over 17 years. He most recently served as the company’s vice president of worldwide marketing and communications. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree from the journalism school at Columbia University.
 
APC provides uninterruptible power supplies that prevent data loss and hardware damage. Its products are used in consumer electronics, corporations and government entities.
 
The Research
Davis’ promotion comes on the heels of a corporate restructuring at APC.
 
In October APC announced Paris-based Schneider Electric SA would acquire it for approximately $6.1 billion.
 
Schneider provides solutions for electrical distribution, automation projects and industrial control.
 
A contact at APC told DailyVista that the company plans on retaining its brand name post-acquisition. He said the company does not work with an ad agency, as all creative work is produced in-house. Our contact confirmed Davis’ role as final decision-maker for marketing initiatives at the company.
 
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, APC spent about $2.4 million on media last year. The majority – about $2.3 million – went to national magazine placement. The remaining $700,000 was dedicated to spot television ads.
 
The Direction
APC may seem cool to hearing from outsiders. We suggest assertive and experienced firms with B-to-B or trade show marketing experience make introductions to Davis now, but keep the company on the radar post-acquisition. Public relations firms that can assist the company in getting its global brand message out to consumers should also make an approach.
