Sun-Times Media Group promotes exec
Media and news conglomerate Sun-Times Media Group announced a promotion to help its advertising efforts in the Chicago city region, according to the company
Gladys Arroyo was named vice president of advertising for the Chicago Sun-Times. She was most recently director of advertising for Pioneer Press West, a division of the Sun-Times Media Group. There she was in charge of advertising and sales efforts for the company’s Hinsdale, Ill., and Oak Park, Ill., offices.
Previously, Arroyo was local sales manager for Univision, a leading Spanish-language media company also owned by the Sun-Times Media Group. Before that she held a number of leadership positions in marketing, advertising and sales with the company, including helping with the launch of Hoy, a Chicago-area Spanish newspaper.
Sun-Times Media Group publishes and distributes a group of newspapers in the greater Chicago metro area. The Sun-Times News Group represents the Chicago Sun-Times, Post-Tribune, Daily Southtown and other papers, as well as corresponding Web properties.
Arroyo will report to Sun-Times Media Group
Senior Vice President of Advertising and Marketing Barbara Swanson.
In a statement, Swanson said Arroyo’s sales and marketing leadership make her the ideal fit for the new role.
“Her insights will help expand the customer base which understands and values the role and reach the Chicago Sun-Times plays in the community,” she said.
Sun-Times Media Group spokesperson Lindley White told WinmoEdge Arroyo will be working primarily with the company’s flagship paper, the Sun-Times and its Web site.
“She’ll be working with our unique products, to connect with different constituencies across the local market place,” White said.
Arroyo’s hire follows a large management shift the company announced in March, with the appointments of SVP of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Thomas Kram, and SVP of Business Development David Martin. The company also recently announced it has filled for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but expects to be able to continue normal business operations.
According to The List database Chicago-based Sard Verbinnen helps the Sun-Times with communications efforts.
White said Swanson was more likely to have a wide-ranging role when it comes to marketing decisions and any possible agency help. That may be a better starting point than going directly to Arroyo for any groups interested in working with the media company.
