Company: Belk, the nation's largest privately owned department-store chain, which offers fashion apparel, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, home furnishings, house wares, gifts, and other merchandise and operates 299 stores in 16 states.
E-Commerce Growth: Belk is expanding its e-commerce distribution and fulfillment center in Union City, S.C. with a $47 million investment. Belk will invest $28 million, while the remaining $19 million will come from CPA:18-Global, a real estate investment trust. This newest investment brings the total invested in the Union County facility to $74 million. The facility will expand by 67%, from 515,000 square feet to 865,000.
John Belk, president and chief operating officer, said the S.C. center has been “a key factor” in belk.com's growth and that the demand for increased distribution and fulfillment operations is the reason for the expansion.
Dallas-Forth Worth Expansion: Belk is planning further expansion with the opening of its flagship in the Dallas Galleria. As Belk's first flagship in Texas, this store is an indication of the retailer's commitment to aggressive growth in Texas, which it believes presents its greatest growth opportunity at the moment. Belk officials hope to open three or four additional stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over the next few years. By expanding into new markets, Belk, a $4 billion company, has set a goal to reach $6 billion in the next five years and plans to invest $700 million on store openings, remodels, expansions and new technology. The retailer also intends to increase spending on branding and customer service.
New Decision Maker: David Zant was promoted to president and chief merchandising officer, effective August 11. Zant was previously EVP and general merchandising manager of men's, home and kids. He has also held senior merchandising positions with Saks and Mercantile Stores, Inc. Zant is replacing Kathryn Bufano, who is leaving Belk to take the top position at The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. (research here).
Media Spend: Media spend was down 11%, dropping to $34.9 million in 2013 from $38.5 million in 2012. TV, magazines and newspaper buys make up the majority of Belk's budget.
