Rite Aid hires CIO amid digital digital, mobile transition
Brand: Rite Aid, nation’s third largest pharmacy chain behind CVS and Walgreens. It has 4,600 stores in 31 states and Washington, D.C.
Opportunity: Appointed Matt Lynch as SVP and chief information officer to lead all aspects of technology, which will include playing a major role in Rite Aid’s shift from traditional media to digital and mobile platforms.
Key to Know: As we reported last month, Rite Aid is at the beginning of its long-term transition to digital and mobile. The company has historically focused spending on traditional media like TV, radio and circulars, but that will change as Rite Aid seeks to become more relevant to today’s consumer.
Expect promotional activity to continue its focus on the Wellness+ loyalty program because it should play a major role in Rite Aid’s efforts to build one-to-one consumer relationships.
Note that Lynch most recently was CIO for Dick’s Sporting Goods, the largest omni-channel sporting goods retailer in the U.S. Therefore, he’s certainly well versed in the transition from brick-and-mortar to digital loyalty and e-commerce.
Keep an eye on rivals Walgreens because they’re shifting their business more towards digital, as well.

Media Spend: Rite Aid allocated $45.3 million towards measured media last year, down from $48.2 million in 2012. The only channels to experience year-over-year spending increases last year were spot TV and Hispanic magazines, according to Kantar Media.
DailyVista’s Take: Rite Aid is playing catch up to CVS and Walgreens on the digital front, so now is the time to reach out across the online, social, mobile and ad-tech landscape. The shift from traditional won’t be overnight, but expect the transition to ramp up quickly now with Lynch on board.
