BJ’s Wholesale names CEO


The Story
BJ's Wholesale Club Inc. announced Laura Sen takes the title of chief executive officer, according to the company.
 
Sen, currently BJ’s president and chief operating officer, will assume her new position Feb. 1, and will retain the title of president. She will also continue to serve on the board of directors.
 
Current Chairman and CEO Herb Zarkin said in a statement Sen has done an outstanding job of managing the company’s day-to-day operations and making the right decisions for members, employees and shareholders.
 
Natick, Mass.-based BJ’s is a membership discount warehouse chain. It operates 178 clubs in 15 states across the Eastern United States and also offers its products through its Web site.
 
The Research
Speaking on background with DailyVista, a BJ’s spokesperson discussed Sen’s leadership role and the company’s marketing strategies.
 
“Laura has done a great job putting senior leadership in place. We have better merchandise, the quality of our produce has improved, she’s raised the standards,” she said. “Sen is in contact with marketing on a daily basis, she has a lot of say as to what goes.”
 
The spokesperson said Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing and e-Commerce Mike Atkinson is the top decision-maker for the department. She said BJ’s primarily uses print and radio advertising.
 
The company also relies on a strong grassroots effort through public relations and community events such as participation in the “Adopt a School” charity program. Direct mail coupons and e-mail communications to members are additional marketing methods.
 
She said BJ’s distinguishes itself from other discount clubs through internal improvements, including products, store display and customer service. She said the average warehouse club has about 4,000 products in stock, while BJ’s offers more than 7,000.
 
“It caters to families. They don’t have to compromise on quality; the same brand names are available for 30 to 40 percent lower prices than normal retail,” she said.
 
The spokesperson confirmed BJ’s uses Boca Raton, Fla.-based Tilson Communications for public relations help and said it has an in-house team that handles most of its advertising needs. She said the company would probably not seek additional help, though she would not want to shut the door on any creative ideas.
 
A new area the company is looking at is digital social networking. The spokesperson said BJ’s would strongly consider bringing in extra outside help as it moves forward on that front.
 
The Direction
The spokesperson made it clear BJ’s is set with most of its creative needs, but would listen to agencies that display online expertise and knowledge in social networking. Public Relations Manager Kelly McFalls is the appropriate entry contact point, and prefers to be reached via e-mail.
