Bombardier Recreational Products hires VP of marketing


The Story
The owner of the popular Evinrude and Johnson outboard motor brands has hired a new marketing executive, according to the company.
 
Bombardier Recreational Products named Richard Palmersheim vice president of marketing and strategic planning for outboard engines. Palmersheim will oversee North American marketing for BRP’s outboard business.
 
BRP is headquartered in Valcourt, Quebec, but Palmersheim will work in the company’s U.S. location in Sturtevant, Wis. The company domestically markets outboard motors, watercraft, snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles under several brand names including Ski-Doo, Sea-Doo, Lynx and Can-Am.
 
Palmersheim most recently served as U.S. General Manager at consumer product company S.C. Johnson. He oversaw global business strategy and product commercialization plans for 11 brand categories.
 
The Research
Christine Schultz, senior public relations coordinator at BRP, told us that Palmersheim is still acclimating himself to the company and has yet to present any marketing initiatives.
 
“Richard’s background in marketing and management … brings new management depth and experience at a critical growth period for BRP’s Outboard Engine Division,” said Roch Lambert, vice president and general manager of boats and outboards.
 
BRP competitor Polaris Industries took a hit in its last quarter (DailyVista article.) The company saw earnings fall 12 percent, which the company blamed on a declining industry.
 
Palmersheim received his MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a concentration in marketing, finance and international business. He also received his bachelor of science in business administration at Madison.
 
According to The List database, BRP works with a roster of agencies for creative work including Chicago-based Cramer-Krasselt and Campbell-Ewald of Warren, Mich. The company spends about $15.7 million on media each year, according to Nielsen Media Research.
 
The Direction
Palmersheim is charged with increasing awareness of BRP’s outboards, a product with a rather specific target audience – boaters. Firms with sports and event marketing or promotional capabilities should approach Palmersheim in coming weeks with ideas on how to reach this market. Direct marketing and interactive firms should also be able to pinpoint BRP’s target audience.
