Souped-up bicycles entering commuter market

The Story
Increasingly, working Americans are making their commutes on two wheels instead of four, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Commuting via bicycle has been the norm in Europe for decades, but Americans are joining the bandwagon, with sales of commute bikes rising 15 percent over the last two years.

However, according to the Bicycle Market Research Institute in Boston, projected sales of commuter bikes in the next two years is expected to rise only 5 to 10 percent.

“There’s no way it will happen here (America),” BMRI President Ash Jaising told the Journal. “The roads are just too dangerous.”

Nonetheless, several bicycle manufacturers are answering this burgeoning trend with their own version of “commuter bikes.” These bikes come equipped with many worker-friendly features including briefcase racks, shock-absorbing seats and lighter-weight frames.

The Research
Specialized Bicycle Components of Morgan Hill, Calif. is making commuter bicycles available for its 2007 line.

Its Globe City model retails for up to $1,200 and among its features are a LED taillight and a halogen bulb in front. Specialized is aiming for the environmentally friendly commuter with its Globe product.

“Air pollution, ozone depletion, obesity…if you can succeed at getting noncyclists on bikes more often, all these problems will become a little smaller,” the Globe’s 2007 catalog boasts.

According to The List database, Specialized has worked with Larkspur, Calif.-based Active Ingredients for creative work.

The Direction
Specialized Bicycle Components has a tough sell on the horizon — the company needs to convince urban professionals to ditch the subway or carpool lane and hop on a bike. With a new product slated for release next year, we'd suggest agencies with outdoor or direct market capabilities contact Specialized with proposals on how to best market the Globe.
