Wilson Sporting Goods' marketing VP hire leads to new digital, product, branding opps


Brand: Amer Sports’ Wilson Sporting Goods Co., the world’s top manufacturer of ball sports equipment and athletic apparel, based in Chicago

Opportunity: The company appointed consumer marketer Amy Weisenbach as its new vice president of marketing, starting May 19. The company also shifted the former marketing VP to vice president of digital.

New Vice Presidents in Marketing and in Digital: Weisenbach, who was most recently VP of marketing for men’s apparel e-tailer Trunk Club and also had tenures with Beam and Unilever, will lead Wilson’s digital and smart product launches, new R&D initiatives, and brand refresh efforts. The company looks to make a major splash in retail, apparel and retail with wearable technology and new product rollouts are planned through the year, so reach out now in mobile ad-tech and social platform initiatives.

Weisenbach assumes Tom Gruger’s former role as he moves to be Wilson’s new VP of digital to ramp up development of connected products. Engage the brand with mobile and social, and about wearable technology, as other sporting goods companies have developed products connecting athlete and applications.

Weisenbach’s and Gruger’s executive shifts are the latest for Wilson following Mike Dowse’s appointment as president of Amer Sports’ ball sports business unit last November. Amer Sports’ brands include Salomon, Wilson, Atomic, Arc’teryx, Precor, Suunto and Mavic.

App-Connected Equipment Product Launches: Wilson plans to launch an app-connected smart basketball, co-developed with SportIQ which can track real-time stats on shooting distance, this winter. Marketers in fitness, health will have the advantage as the company moves in the direction of linking 

Look out for Under Armour’s  big marketing ramp up, is a leader in the wearable tech category.

NPD Group stated in its “Wearable Technology Study” that the digital fitness device market has grown to $330 million, with Fitbit holding majority 58% share, but the market still lacks one national player.
