Micron seeks to increase brand awareness


The Story
In an effort to increase awareness of its brand, semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology Inc. announced its participation in the Tecate Score Baja 1000, according to The Wall Street Journal.
 
To get the Micron brand name out to the masses, the company is sponsoring four vehicles competing in the grueling Tecate Score Baja 1000, a 1,000-mile race crossing the California desert. Nearly half of the Baja participants don’t make it to the finish line, given the course’s punishing terrain.
 
Four Micron executives will strap into souped-up vehicles equipped with Micron image sensors and Lexar memory cards, which will shoot and store video footage of the Nov. 15 race.
 
Based in Boise, Idaho, Micron develops and manufactures image sensors that go into camera phones, memory for computers, servers and electronics devices and NAND-Flash memory used in electronics. In March, Micron acquired flash memory products manufacturer Lexar Media Inc. which makes the memory cards for digital cameras, cell phones and other products.
 
As a result, Micron wants to increase its visibility and is also gearing up for a marketing campaign after the launch.
 
In the Baja 1000, Micron intends to show off its product’s resilience and technology.
 
“We are trying to do two things,” Steven Appleton, chief executive officer told the Journal. “We’re doing a real live test on the product’s durability…and in addition we are driving awareness of the company.”
 
The Research
We spoke with Micron spokesperson Daniel Francisco, who gave us more information on the company’s involvement in the Baja 1000 and their marketing plans.
 
The race is “an opportunity to take the company to a new audience,” he said.
 
After crossing the finish line, Micron will seek out marketing opportunities.  
 
“We haven’t put (a campaign) together yet, but we’ll look to leverage all kinds of marketing opportunities with our customers and the industry as a result of the race,” Francisco said.
 
Francisco said Micron will give the company added exposure in the retail channel.

According to Francisco, Micron has a robust internal marketing team, works with New York-based Weber Shandwick for public relations and with McCann Erickson in Salt Lake City for creative needs.
 
The Direction
We suggest agencies make an introduction via a congratulatory note to Appleton and his team for their participation in the Baja 1000. The company competes with firms like SanDisk and Toshiba, so agencies with expertise in the technology field that can assist in Micron’s brand leveraging should also make approaches. Branding agencies can suggest the best ways to establish the difference between Micron and its rivals.
