McLean comes to his new role from Microsoft, where he most recently served as general manager for Microsoft’s new business efforts in emerging markets. Prior to that, he was the CEO of an insurance underwriting software company that was a partner firm to Microsoft. nization, which encompasses marketing, product management, customer insights, sales operations, sales enablement and revenue management. Recent Acquisitions & Changes: Earlier this month, Iron Mountain announced the acquisition of Fontis International, a Denver-based provider of cloud-based subscription service for records retention guidelines. According to Iron Mountain, the acquisition will give the company the ability to now offer “unique capabilities for continuously updating retention schedules that can be distributed in a fully automated manner.” Per the acquisition, Fontis CTO Matt Hillery will join Iron Mountain to lead sales and product development for this service and technology-based offering. This is the first acquisition in cloud-based record retention for Iron Mountain. 

Iron Mountain also completed the transition to a real estate investment trust (REIT) this summer. Meaney said Iron Mountain fits well as a REIT due to its sizeable real estate portfolio and business model, through which the company incurs occupancy costs on a square foot basis and generates storage rental revenue on a cubic foot basis. 

Sustained Struggles: Iron Mountain’s struggles are the large shifts in the industry it leads.  In the US, physical data storage and retrieval are becoming things of the past and electronic document storage and retrieval is growing rapidly. In order for the data management company to stay on top, it will have to continue shifting its offerings and the acquisition of Fontis is a step in that direction. 

Target Customers: Iron Mountain’s target customers are largely in industries that deal in sensitive information with heavy regulatory guidelines on the storage and destruction of such records, such as healthcare, law firms, energy, financial, insurance companies, retail or mortgage companies.

Competitors:  Competitors include Alfresco, to name a few.
